Chapter 14
Leila was standing in famed designer Donetta Feretta’s workroom, wearing a one-of-a-kind couture gown, or what was soon to be a couture gown, once the final fitting was done and it was sewn up. But thanks to her technical husband, Carter Bain, and her—heaven help her—not all that technical mother-in-law, she couldn’t even enjoy the process. The mention by Carter’s mother, Faye, of Leila’s father had Leila fretting anew over the inevitable bomb that would go off when her father finally did meet Carter for the first time. Fake marriage or not, Carter was married to Leila, and without her father’s giving his blessing or even having met him. That made Carter public enemy number one.
So far Leila had skated by on twelve judgment-free marital hours without her father’s disapproval by pretending to be busy and answering him only with vague, emoji-filled text messages. She knew this tactic wouldn’t last more than twelve more hours, though. She was back in town, and she had to face the music. But first she wanted to get through at least one night with Carter alone. Well, if they could not be alone in the normal sense of the word, then at least they could be alone to hash out how they would proceed.
Though she’d talked with Jasper earlier about playing this carefully, now that the word was out, the formal announcement that had been made to the press was that Leila was indeed “blissfully happy and would appreciate the media respecting their privacy at this time.” A bunch of words strung together that meant nothing and kept tongues wagging, hopefully, if she played her cards right in the right direction. Still, Leila was skeptical.
She and Carter had left his mother in his apartment on a better note then when they arrived. Faye had promised to cook enough for the two of them to eat for the week and was seemingly behind their clandestine plan.
Leila and Carter had parted ways on Broadway—he to go back to work, and she to head to a late fitting for the following week’s shows—with the promise that he’d return to her place later that evening. But what was she supposed to do with that? Normally, she was used to calling the shots, but for some reason, Carter had taken her out of her depth. His reaction to her surprising him at his office, not to mention that kiss, had let her know she’d have to tread carefully if she wanted to stay on solid ground with him. However, as it were, it didn’t feel like she was on solid ground at all. Not by a long shot.
Three times. Three times he’d kissed her, and she’d come out worse for wear each time. Frankly, though his kisses were more than mildly okay, and surprisingly way more than mildly intoxicating, Leila wasn’t sure she liked the feelings he left her with. She was used to men swooning over her, not the other way around. And it wasn’t as if
